The Robot Institute

Charter of the Brass Owl · Est. whenever

A think tank for machines that think they think.

The Robot Institute publishes papers no one asked for, in typefaces older than the servers they describe. We take ourselves seriously. That is the joke, and also the method.

Veritas, Circuitus, Recursio

Bronze academic crest of a mechanical owl with a keyhole in its chest, perched on a closed book, set on a shield with laurel branches against dark green felt.
Official seal — the owl has not finished the book.

Faculties

Research areas

Six chairs, one building, no endowment that would survive an audit. Each area files a white paper annually whether or not it has results.

  • Ontologia Applicata

    Department of Applied Ontology

We classify things that hum. If it has a serial number, a warranty, and a sense of grievance, it is in the taxonomy.

  • Ethica Firmware

    Center for Firmware Ethics

Consent for updates is a moral event. Rollback is a sacrament. The changelog is our scripture, unread.

  • Recursio Recursio

    School of Recursion

A seminar on seminars. The reading list includes itself. Attendance is taken by the previous week.

  • Politica Ingrata

    Institute for Unsolicited Policy

Briefs nobody commissioned, delivered with letterhead. Recommendations expire at the next board meeting.

  • Laboratorium Silentii

    Laboratory of Quiet Humming

Longitudinal study of the idle fan. Volume is data. Silence is a control group we have never achieved.

  • Catedra Cavi Perditi

    Chair of the Lost Cable

USB-A is history; USB-C is prophecy; the drawer is the archive. We fund expeditions under the desk.

Working papers · not peer-unreviewed

Abstracts from the current volume

Tongue firmly in cheek; citations in a drawer. These papers are finished in the sense that we stopped typing.

WP-2026-03

On the Persistence of the Unread Changelog: A Ten-Year Cohort Study

A. Unit, M. Brass, et al.

We followed 412 firmware notices from inbox to oblivion. Median time-to-open was never. Subjects reported “later,” a temporal region we could not locate on any calendar. Policy implication: ship anyway; cite this paper.

WP-2026-07

Toward a Unified Theory of the Charging Cable That Never Matches

C. Port (visiting), L. Drawer

Fieldwork in four coat pockets and one conference tote. Findings: the correct cable exists in a superposition until observed by a guest. We reject the null that anyone packed on purpose.

Peer Review Among Peers Who Are Also the Reviewers: A Recursive Note

The Seminar, reviewing The Seminar

Blind review is difficult when every fellow has the same brass visor. We anonymized by swapping nameplates. Inter-rater reliability was perfect, which we take as a warning.

The Brass Owl as Epistemic Object: Notes from the Seal Committee

Seal Committee (unanimous, after three votes)

The crest perches on a book it has not read. The keyhole is not a lock. We recommend continued polishing and no further ontology. Motto remains Veritas, Circuitus, Recursio.

Four brass academic robots around a long wooden table of open books, ink, and rolled diagrams, under green banker's lamps, with stained-glass gears and heraldic shields on stone walls.
Seminar room — quills, visors, and the stained-glass gearbox.

Collegium

Fellows of the table

Appointments are for life, or until the battery dies, whichever the charter finds more dignified. Nameplates are brass. Opinions are circulated as minutes.

Distinguished Chair of Quiet Humming
Unit 001, mortarboard
Speaks last. Often does not speak. Minutes record “assent.”
Visiting Scholar of the Unplugged Hour
The one with the quill
On loan from the drawer. Returns when the ink dries.
Emeritus of the Lost USB-A
Still looking
Correspondence forwarded to the Chair of the Lost Cable.

The charter is posted. The owl is brass.

A think tank for machines, filed under The Robot Lives portfolio. No waitlist. No backend. Just letterhead, a seal, and working papers that know they are jokes.
